Hanson, Truong nominated for ExCEL Award

Faribault High School has named Mitchell Hanson and Chau Truong as its nominees for the ExCEL Award. Every year, the Minnesota State High School League invites member schools to recognize two juniors who are active in school activities, show leadership qualities, and volunteer in their community.

Hanson, the son of Scott and Kathryn Hanson, is an A honor roll student and a two-year member of the honor society. He’s also a founding member of the physics study group and part of the science team.
Hanson is a three-year member and all-conference performer for the boys’ cross-country team. He’s also won seven combined varsity letters as a member of the swimming, track and clay target teams.

Hanson has participated in theatre, musical theatre, children’s theater and is a charter member of the men’s choir. He’s volunteered at the Legion dinner, the elementary fun run, the Special Olympics, by working with the elderly and by assisting in community clean-up.

Truong, the daughter of Liem and Tung Truong, carries a 4.0 grade-point average, is a member of Student Council, STOPS and the Minnesota Honors Society. She’s a two-year captain of the math team and is also a member of the science team.

Truong is also a three-year member of the varsity girls’ tennis team, a three-year member of the Philharmonic Orchestra and a section leader in the Chamber Orchestra. She has volunteered as a youth tutor and as a committee leader in Toys for Tots fundraising, helped with community clean-up, and held leadership roles in the youth tennis program and fine arts community performances.

This is the 23rd year the MSHSL has sponsored the ExCEL Award. The winners will be announced Feb. 4 and be recognized on Channel 45 during its broadcasts of the 2019 winter tournaments.
