The Faribault Emeralds dance team won its seventh consecutive Big Nine Conference championship Saturday at Albert Lea High School. The team placed first in both the high kick and jazz competitions, outscoring second place by more than 40 points in each.

“We’ve kind of had to overcome a lot of injuries and other things that have held us back this year. It adds a lot of stress going into these competitions not knowing if the team is going to be whole enough to do this,” 28th-year head coach Lois Krinke said. “But they went out there and did absolutely amazing.”

The latest injury the Emeralds have had to overcome was to coach Krinke herself. She fell and broke three ribs and fractured her scapula just a week earlier, and spent two days in the hospital before returning to coach the team at practice on Thursday. The team’s preparation was cut short when Friday’s practice was cancelled due to weather, but its spirits were lifted when coach Krinke was able to return to the helm Saturday.

“My assistants helped guide last week’s practices and made sure things were getting done that needed to be done,” Krinke said. “It was really gratifying to be back. When they hit that last turn set in the jazz competition, I sat at the table with tears in my eyes.”

The Emeralds opened the meet by dominating the high kick competition.

“It was almost close to perfection,” Krinke said. “There are still some tiny issues to address, but they did an incredible job with the kicks. Win or lose, I told them they couldn’t have done that dance any better.”

The jazz competition hasn’t come as easy to the Emeralds lately, so they made some adjustments to their routine in hopes it would go more smoothly.

“Jazz has always been a struggle for us. We focused on it a lot more the last couple of weeks, sped up the music for our turn sequences and changed a lot of the choreography,” Krinke said. “I literally had my fingers crossed that they would hit that last turn and they did. I knew they were home free after that.”

The Emeralds compete again Jan. 26 at Mounds View. The section meet is Feb. 9 at Kasson where the top three out of 14 teams will advance to state Feb. 15-16 at Target Center in Minneapolis. The Emeralds have qualified for state all 28 years Krinke has coached the team and won 12 state championships during that span.
