The Faribault softball team made history on Friday, June 8, winning the Class 3A state championship in the program’s first-ever trip to state.

Behind the pitching of junior McKayla Armbruster and an errorless defense, the Falcons held opponents to one run in three games. They defeated Bemidji 8-0 and Winona 7-1 before shutting out North Branch 2-0 in the finals at Caswell Park in North Mankato. The Falcons finished the season with a record of 23-2.

Armbruster opened the tournament by throwing a no-hitter and struck out 37 batters while walking just one over the three games. She was named to the all-tournament team along with shortstop Bre Bresnahan and centerfielder Allison Schak.

The state championship comes just five seasons after the Falcons went 1-17.

“You just dream of this,” catcher Abby Van Ryn told the Faribault Daily News. “We’ve always dreamed of it.”
