The Big 9 Music Festival is the longest running music festival of its kind in the country and is seen as a pillar of musical performance, creation, collaboration, and support for music education nationwide. Faribault Public Schools is excited to be hosting the 90th Big 9
Music Festival on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Throughout the day, Faribault High School will be buzzing with nearly two thousand student musicians from the twelve Big 9 schools. There will be a total of 35 ensembles performing during the day for their peers, families, and community members. Bands perform in the Nomeland Gymnasium, orchestras perform in the Michael J. Hanson Performing Arts Center, and choirs perform in the nearby Trinity Lutheran Church.

These performances will be adjudicated by our three guest clinicians:

  • Band: Dr. Henry Dorn, Assistant Director of Music at St. Olaf College in Northfield,MN
  • Choir: Dr. Merrin Guice Gill, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Bethel University in St. Paul, MN
  • Orchestra: Dr. Chung Park, Associate Professor of Music at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN

After all 35 ensembles have performed, many of the top student musicians from each school come together to create the Big 9 Select Band, Choir, and Orchestra. These ensembles will be directed by our guest clinicians at the Big 9 Select Finale Concert at 7:30 PM in the Nomeland Gymnasium.

Faribault Public Schools and our district music department is thrilled to invite the community of Faribault, as well as the students, colleagues, families, school board members, and administration from all the communities of our conference to celebrate the rich musical talents of the students of Southern Minnesota.
